Favorite Find: An Undeniably Chic Accessory

Dauphines of New York headbandAfter so many years testing products dubbed the “next big thing,” I’ve turned into that skeptical editor who’s heard it all a million times before. Just call me picky Nicki. It takes more than a fancy catch phrase to capture my attention. So on those few occasions when I discover something that’s special enough to get me hooked, I can’t wait to share.

My favorite, new discovery is the Dauphines of New York headbands. In addition to being gorgeous – they double as necklaces. Designer Summer Rej, a young 20-something who got her start working on the advertising side of fashion magazines launched the first collection in 2010, and it’s been full steam ahead ever since.

Dauphines of New York headbandThe headbands retail from $80-$225 and have an adjustable band in the back so you can customize the size according to how you’re wearing the accessory. From Ikat prints to metal chains and semi-precious stones, there are more than enough styles, colors and textures to choose from. I have the red Regal Countess, (shown right in blue) which is understated, simple and works for everyday. I’m dying over the Rock Goddess Bohemian-Luxe (shown above). It would look amazing worn as a necklace! There’s even a stunning bridal collection.

You can buy these headbands online at Shopbop.com. To see all of the latest styles, visit dauphinesofnewyork.com. P.S. The fall designs are set to debut soon!

Makeup Bag Giveaway!

makeup bagA makeup bag’s days are numbered. Chances are it will fall victim to a loose lipstick lid, foundation leakage or shattered shadow.

Then there’s the Vemayca Cosmetic Case. It doesn’t reinvent the wheel. It’s just a durable, functional bag with nine lives. How so? Well, the interior has a recyclable liner that’s removable with a few simple built-in snaps and the actual bag is machine washable. You’ll never have to deal with the frustrating discovery of a surprise explosion in your carrier again! Just wipe down the liner, or better yet, toss it, pop in a new one and be on your way. Another bonus — side zipper pockets that offer extra storage.

I’m giving two lucky readers the chance to win a Vemayca Cosmetic Bag.

Best Summer Sunblocks

I’m a stickler for sunblock. Especially as I approach my mid-thirties, damage from past burns like the one I got in my 20s during a family vacation in the Caribbean is now coming back to haunt me. Damn brown spots! My grandma always told me to stay out of the sun even when others said a little tan made my pale complexion look healthy. She knew what was up. Wearing SPF should be as habitual as wearing your seatbelt. So, just as I did last summer, I’m not letting this one slide by without introducing you to the latest blocking formulas that would make my grandma proud.

Mineral Suncreen

“Mineral” has become a buzzword in the beauty industry. Every big brand from CoverGirl to L’Oreal has launched a natural line to capitalize on this trend. Sunblocks are no exception. They’re the latest response to people questioning the safety of traditionally used chemical formulas. While studies haven’t proven that the chemicals are harmful to our health, these options are a good alternative for those who believe the jury is still out.

Alba Botanica Fragrance Free Sunblock Mineral SPF 30. Offers UVA/UVB protection and is formulated with aloe vera, green tea and chamomile to soothe sensitive skin.

Clarins UV Plus HP Day Screen. This new non-greasy formula could double as your daytime moisturizer. It’s light, absorbs quickly and doesn’t leave any residue behind.

Beach Day Favorite

We all have a go-to sunscreen that we buy time and again, season after season. My tried and true favorite is La Roche-Posay Anthelios SPF 60. Having had such success with this sunblock, I got my mother-in-law to try it. She’s the woman you’d mistake for a beekeeper at the beach, and it’s proven so effective, she’s stripped off a few of her layers of SPF protective clothing and now buys it in bulk! It comes in a cream, which I like for beach days, and a lightweight fluid. As expected, the brand has also launched a nice mineral block (Anthelios 50 Mineral), but my loyalty remains with the original.

Note: For the iPhone users out there, check out La Roche-Posay’s new app called “MY UV Check.” You enter your location and it tells you the index for the day’s UVA and UVB exposure. Pretty cool!

Wet Skin sprays

Nowadays, practically every new beauty product has a groundbreaking technology. Winter introduced a mess-free way to color your hair at home using a foam mousse. This summer’s technology du jour is found in the new “wet skin” blocks. The formulas are easier to apply than ever because they can be sprayed directly on wet or sweaty skin. Both Neutrogena Wet Skin Sunblock Spray SPF 85+ and Aveeno Hydrosport Sunblock Spray SPF 85 are convenient to apply after a dip.

Sunblock + Skincare

If you’re looking to repair sun damage as it’s happening, Neova DNA Damage Control blocks rays with zinc oxide and contains marine plankton that the company claims has been clinically proven to reduce DNA damage by 45% in one hour.

NEWSFLASH: The FDA just announced new regulations for the sunscreen industry that will go into effect next summer. Here’s what to expect:

1. More accurate labeling to show you how much protection you’re getting from both UVB (burning) and UVA (aging) rays. In the past, companies have been able to claim a high SPF simply based on the measure of UVB protection. If a sunblock doesn’t live up to the requirements that would provide broad spectrum protection, which means it fights both UVA and UVB rays, a warning on the packaging will have to state that the block is not shown to protect skin cancer or early aging.

2. The terms sunblock, waterproof and sweatproof are disappearing. These give consumers a false sense of protection and will be replaced with more humble descriptors such as water resistant.

3. SPFs over 50 may be banned. The reason being that high SPFs like 100 are misleading consumers to believe they’re getting way more protection than they actually are. As a result, people aren’t applying enough product or reapplying as often as they should.

The Beauty Girl "Best in Beauty" Event Highlights & Photos

Thank you to everyone who attended my “Best in Beauty” event this past Thursday!

To see all of the festivities from the evening, scroll down and click on the photos.

For this celebration of beauty, I handpicked some of my favorite beauty vendors in Chicago to give women a night of pampering, and what a night it was! The upbeat crowd of 100 was all smiles indulging in perfect eye brow waxes and incredible hairstyling (see below gallery for some of the red-carpet worthy updos) provided by Maxine salon, relaxing chair massages courtesy of David Barton Gym and custom airbrush tans, thanks to the girls at Glo Airbrush Tan. And the VIPs were treated to a special non-surgical mini brow lift from C.I. Luxury MedSpa.

Votre VuIn between services, guests got to sample and learn about the fantastic French skincare line Votre Vu. Not to mention, everyone left with some of my favorite Votre Vu products (Antioxidant Eye Gelee and Amour D’Ore multi-vitamin oil for Face, Body and Hair) in their gift bags. Another perk of the event — 20% off Kerastase and Shu Uemura haircare, two brands that never go on sale.

A big congrats to all of the raffle prize winners! During the night I gave away over $1000 in freebies including $450 worth of Botox, a makeover at Maxine salon, a suite of Votre Vu Skincare products valued at $500, a one-hour massage and two sessions for in-home airbrush tanning.

Keep in mind, you’ll never leave a Beauty Girl event without a legit, high-value gift bag loaded with stuff that will make your friends jealous. For this event I included over $300 worth of goodies including my favorite summer must-haves like Degree’s new deodorant and Neutrogena and Aveeno sunblocks. And never underestimate the power of paper. There were also gift cards for amazing treatments like a $125 facial, haircut discount and a week’s pass plus free personal training session at David Barton Gym.

The bar was hopping all night long. To keep everyone feeling and looking beautiful from the inside out, the delicious SnapDragon beauty beverage, a perservative-free drink loaded with all kinds of good-for-you antioxidants, juices and vitamins like green tea, mango and ginkgo biloba, was served (note: it’s refreshing on its own but also makes for a great mixer) as was Effen’s newest vodka flavor, Effen Cucumber. It smells as clean and refreshing as the cucumber water you drink at a spa! Being that I’m preggars, I wasn’t able to imbibe, but even non-drinkers were raving about how good it tasted. Of course, The Beauty Girl events are never complete without some sweets. The cupcakes from Lovely Bake Shop were a hit.

Have fun perusing the gallery of pics!

Guests promptly arrived at 6pm, and there’s already a line out the door!

My mantra is “Beauty Shouldn’t Be A Bitch,” and it’s definitely not when you’re able to knock out all your beauty services, like getting your brows waxed, in one night.

Chilling out during a much needed massage.

The tanning team delivering natural looking airbrush tans in time for summer.

Cupcakes and curls! Now that’s how to multi-task.

The Cellular Intelligence team gearing up for a night of mini brow lifts.

Yummy cupcakes from Lovely Bake Shop.

The V.I.P. treatment!

Serving up the SnapDragon!

Sharing the scoop on the incredible French skincare line Votre Vu.

It’s a packed house!

The talented team of stylists created many a red-carpet worthy hairstyles like this one!

And my presentation begins…

Congrats to all the raffle prize winners!

Me with my fab intern Cody.

Have to give props to my biggest supporter, my hubby, who came to my event and braved the sea of women.

All smiles after checking out the gift bags!

Gift bags!

MAC Magically Cool Liquid Powder

Lately it’s been so hot, I’ve been sweating through my underwear. I know, gross! I can’t be the only one given the fact that I just featured a product made to spruce up your Queen V. Now that I’ve offered relief for the swamp down there, how about some action for the one part of you that everyone sees — your mug.

When humidity sets in, the makeup you’ve painted on melts off like a Dali but looks way less surreal. To break the heat, MAC introduced its Magically Cool Liquid Powder. It’s a sheer face powder made with 50% water. As a result, it releases a cooling sensation that feels like a mist when applied to skin. How cool is that! Although called a powder, the formula, which comes in three shades (Truth and Light, Honey Rose and Cajun), has a slight shimmer that I think looks best when worn as a highlighter or bronzer to add radiance.

Now I think I’ve officially used the word “cool” in one post more than my 13-year-old niece does in a typical sentence. Mission accomplished…in more ways than one!
