Solid Deodorants

Summer can feel like one big Bikram yoga studio. From the crowded subways to street fairs, moving from one position to the next amidst an abundance of skin, sweat and stench, your chances of getting stifled by a whiff of horrid BO are scary. In the spirit of yoga, do unto others as you’d like done unto you and erase the fear of not wearing a deodorant that works. Here are two new formulas worth the exercise.

Degree deodorantDegree Women Expert Protection with motionSENSE. I’ve never been a big sweater. Now that I’m preggars, the tables have turned. All it takes is a walk down the street to turn on the waterworks in my pits. Degree’s new deodorant with antiperspirant has been a savior. It’s motion activated so it starts working when you start moving, before you start schvitzing and smelling.

Clean deodorantClean Moisture-Absorbent Deodorant. Envelop skin in the aroma of freshly washed linens, and you can’t get “cleaner” than that. I love the warm cotton scent of this aluminum-free deodorant. It’s not the most powerful sweat-plugging formula, so I wouldn’t apply before a marathon. But, I recommend wearing with your summer whites because this roll-on protects clothes from unsightly yellow underarm stains.

Favorite Natural Skincare Products

Pregnancy has its charms. Kettle chips never tasted so good, my husband treats me to foot massages galore, and according to those around me, I have a “glow.” I can’t take credit for my crazy cravings or caring husband, but I do have something to do with my skin’s newfound glow. With such precious cargo in my belly, I’ve shelved the retinols and salicylic acids and delved into natural skincare formulas that are free of parabens, alcohol and other chemical offenders. Over the past 6 months, I’ve tried a bunch of products like the Tata Harper line I introduced you to awhile back. For the most part, I really like what I’ve found. Here’s what I’m loving right now.

Skin by Monica Olsen cleanserSkin by Monica Olsen Restore MSM Facial Cleanser I’ve found that some natural face washes don’t really remove dirt and makeup. This one actually works and has won itself a new fan — my hubby. We both like that it’s incredibly hydrating, has a lighter-than-honey consistency and a little goes a long way.

Melvita moisturizerMelvita Apicosma Moisturizing Cream It’s nice to have a go-to moisturizer like this one. I use it morning and night and can count on it to relieve tightness without causing any irritating side effects. The company was founded by a French beekeeper, so it makes sense the formula, which is organically certified, contains royal jelly and honey along with other nourishing ingredients like Aloe vera and rose hip oil.

Omorovicza cleanserOmorovicza Thermal Cleansing Balm Little things, like a bright nail polish color, make me happy. So does this cleanser. I use it when I want to treat myself. It smells like a spa and is made with minerals, extracted from hot springs in Budapest, that offer loads of skin benefits like firming, softening and repairing. I just rub the thick, creamy texture onto my skin and rinse off with a damp washcloth.

The Body ShopThe Body Shop Nutriganics and Natrulift Skincare Collections
I was happy to find out that a mainstream retailer like The Body Shop was launching two natural skincare lines. Natrulift contains organic pomegranate to firm skin while Nutriganics has earned itself the same Ecocert certification as Melvita, proving that all of the ingredients and packaging are organic and ecological. That all sounded good, but I wasn’t completely sold until I attended the launch event and actually got to experience the products.

Celebrity esthetician Molly Walsh (she gives facials to Jim Carrey and Brook Shields!) treated me to my own mini facial using products from the lines and shared her tips that of course I’m passing on to you. Two of my favorites:

1. “Don’t dry your skin in between steps like cleansing and moisturizing. That’s because skin is like a sponge and will absorb the products best if the formulas are applied when skin is still damp.”

2. “Instead of rinsing off your cleanser by splashing it with water, take a damp wash cloth and use slight pressure to remove the face wash. This action actually gives your skin a daily mild exfoliation so there’s no need to incorporate an additional exfoliating product into your skincare routine.

Do You Like Kate Middleton’s Wedding Dress?

Kate Middleton wedding dressWatching Kate Middleton and Prince William’s wedding day on TV made me want to get married all over again. I loved my wedding, and I only hope this couple will have their own special memories of their day. One being the image of how dapper he looked and how royal and elegant she appeared. Critics are already saying the dress didn’t have enough drama. I disagree.Grace Kelly wedding dressKate was a vision in a timeless silhouette that reminded me of Grace Kelley’s gown but the new bride’s had a modern twist. Designed by Sarah Burton, the 36-year-old creative director of luxury British label Alexander McQueen, the lace and satin masterpiece flattered every part of her body from her square shoulders to her tiny waist. I would call this Kate a classic from her dress to her flowing hair, simple, warm makeup and stately diamond drop earrings gifted to her by her parents. She looked like the best version of herself and stayed true to her understated, down-to-earth roots, that is as best as a princess crowned with a glittering heirloom tiara can.

Trend to Try: Broadway Nail Stickers

I’m in sticker shock. I’ve never gotten more compliments on my hands than when I dress them in the hottest nail trend — nail stickers. From boutique brands like Inque to major players including Sally Hansen and OPI, nail companies are launching wraps that you simply stick on nails. As I’ve displayed in previous posts, they come in all kinds of fun patterns and colors that could take hours to create with a regular lacquer. The latest ones I applied (shown right) are the new celebrity-inspired leopard print designs from Broadway Nails.

Pros: Like most on the market, the Broadway Nail set comes with nail strips in a variety of sizes as well as a double-edged file that has a soft end to help the wraps adhere wrinkle-free and a rough end to file away excess material. They were easy to apply and even easier to remove. Just peel them off! If you’re wondering, they didn’t damage my nails.

Cons: Here’s my beef. The material of these stickers is a bit flimsier than other brands I’ve tried so it was trickier to get them on my nail completely crinkle-free. I also noticed that they started to look worn just after a couple of days.

Overall report: I’d wear them again. They’re chic, convenient and a magnet for compliments.

Would you get your eyebrows tinted?

I recently visited Chicago’s Sine Qua Non salon for my first time. As a beauty writer, part of my job is to take beauty risks like trying new services, sampling a variety of salons and so forth and then reporting on my experiences so you can get the real 411 on whether or not it’s worth taking the plunge. This way, if anyone ends up with a crooked haircut, it’s me — not you.

I went to the Lincoln Park salon not knowing what the hell the name meant or that I was going to end up leaving with dyed eyebrows. My intention was to just get a brow wax. When it comes to brows, skinny is not sexy. I learned this the hard way a fews years back when mine suffered from a beauty adventure gone bad. Brows should have clean lines, tamed hairs and a natural fullness. What I got were two narrow frowns that had been plucked to smithereens. The weeks it took for my brows to bounce back proved how necessary they are. They not only frame your face, they help form your expressions (unless you’ve overdone it with Botox).

Thankfully, history did not repeat itself during this salon visit, and my arches were whipped back into shape with a gentle wax. Then, I took things a step further. The brow expert Anne mentioned that she tinted eyebrows. Even though I use a brow powder at home to fill in my brows and darken them a touch, I’d never considered coloring mine before. But, tempt me with a new service, and I wouldn’t be doing my job if I said no. So, I decided I was up for the ride. (See how they turned out in the above pic).

She first rubbed something that was like Vaseline on the skin around my brows so it didn’t get stained and then applied the tint. After about 10 minutes, Annie swiped off the color with a wet cotton ball. While the process was uneventful, I was pleasantly surprised by how this tweak could make such a positive impact on my face and on my lifestyle. The subtle contrast created between my fair skin and dark brows really accentuated my blue eyes. Plus, I’m really liking that my makeup routine requires one less step. I’ve shoved my brow powder to the bottom of my makeup bag and that’s where it will remain for at least the next six weeks (that’s how long it takes for the dye to gradually fade). Better yet, there’s no upkeep or touchup required. Just gotta decide when to schedule my next appointment. What about you? Would you get your eyebrows tinted? Comment below! p.s. Turns out Sine Qua Non means “an indispensable or essential ingredient.”
